What is public liability insurance?

Public liability insurance covers the costs of legal defence and compensation if a member of the public makes a claim against you, your business or your employees. In some cases, it is also known as liability insurance.

Claims can vary in nature. For example, if you are a window fitter and a member of the public injures themselves by tripping over your tools, that person could sue you for compensation.

Other claims can arise from damage to a person’s property. So if you’re a professional painter and decorator but you accidentally spill paint on an expensive rug, a claim could be made against you to replace or repair the damage you caused.

Public liability insurance will only cover the cost of claims made by people external to your business or organisation. Some client contracts even require you to have this type of insurance in place before carrying out work for them.

This is one of the reasons why it is commonly purchased alongside employer’s liability cover.
